Reaffirming prior statements, Sun said that it intends to open-source its Java and N1 software at a later date. The free software will cover its Java Enterprise System set of server middleware, Java development tools and N1 management software. The move will create a single package called the Solaris Enterprise System. It will include Sun's Solaris 10 operating system, PostgreSQL open-source database, the Java Enterprise System server software and tools, Sun N1-branded provisioning and management tools, and Secure Desktop software.

An anonymous reader writes "The Open Source Development Labs has published preliminary results from its desktop Linux survey, which had 3,300 responses. The month-long online survey focused on determining the key issues driving Linux on the desktop, as well as the major barriers to Linux desktop adoption. 'What was most surprising to us was probably the top two reasons given for deploying Linux on the desktop,' OSDL's Principal Analyst Dave Rosenberg said. 'It's not TCO (total cost of ownership), or security, or lack of license fees. It was 'employees requesting Linux (user demand)' and because 'my competitors have successfully deployed Linux,' he added."

Magellan Metasearch is a modular meta search engine, enabling users
to monitor as many search engines as they want. It provides a complex
query language with standard boolean operators, meta-operators (to
search through pages' metadata), and proximity operators. This language
enables users to perform far more complex queries than what common
search engines currently support. It can be fed any custom sources,
since its abstraction layer manages the search results and their meta
tags in a uniform way. In conjunction with the local process scheduler
(such as "cron"), Magellan enables you to save your requests and replay
them later automatically; new results are sent through email and RSS
in realtime. Magellan also provides full anonymity through smart
multi-proxy support.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Fixes several bugs in the MySQL single database drivers that prevented Magellan from working properly in command line mode. The Google Web driver has been adapted to the new output format from the search engine. A potential bug in the proxy management system has been fixed.

The Bind9 SNMP Subagent provides indexed BIND 9
statistics via SNMP output. Data, query, and graph templates are provided for Cacti.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Completely disables the output of the Index branches. They should be 'invisible' so they don't interfere with the table(s). The Cacti templates have been fixed to account for this. All (?) configurable options have been put into a config file. The MIBDIRS check to determine whether it is running from the shell or SNMPd was flawed. It only worked on Debian GNU/Linux. Instead, the OID is set to the correct/real value when going into the 'get input from STDIN' loop. This is a sure sign of running through the SNMP system. A missing help() function (referenced, but didn't exist) was added.

card numbers. It's now highly configurable, so you
can now generate numbers with their own custom
fields and extract information from a number. Some
example shell-scripts are included which show you
the new usage. The documentation was rewritten.

ability to setup a filter using iana_protocol_name

BBStatus is an IP accounting package and an SNMP and IP monitoring tool for Linux. It collects, summarizes, and displays the values from its database. It can be used for IP accounting (allows you to design various
kinds of accounting filters), SNMP monitoring (collects data making SNMP requests), ICMP monitoring (stores and summarizes values like min, avg, max reply time, and packet loss), and client traffic filtering (using various types of filters). It also provides user based access so that every user can log in and visualize various data (depending on access rights). It requires PostgreSQL, Apache with mod_auth_pgsql, Perl(Net::SNMP), and RRDTool.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:

xmms-crossfade is an output plugin for XMMS. Its
main feature is automatic crossfading. It also
removes the gaps between tracks, to play whole MP3
albums without any audible interruption.
xmms-crossfade supports OSS via a builtin driver,
and any other platform by using existing output
plugins. As of version 0.3.9, the Audacious and
BMP players are also supported.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Support for the Beep Media Player and Audacious
players was added. Patches were added for
supported players. These patches provide hooks for
XMMS-crossfade, which are used for querying
information about the current state of XMMS. With
this information, it is possible to provide more
reliable songchange detection, which should fix
broken crossfades when playing songs from slow
media. This should also fix the segfault-on-exit
bug that many users have been encountering.
Finally, XMMS-crossfade should now compile using
GCC4.

Just like last year, I would like to remind those who are not following the security news closely to take a look at the list of "The Twenty Most Critical Internet Security Vulnerabilities", released by SANS. Unlike last year, the list shows an interesting trend: a major shift away from platform vulnerabilities towards cross-platform applications. Such applications, when deployed without enough thinking, equally endanger Unix and Windows systems. In addition, an absense of glaring and commonly exploited hole in Unix/Linux is of interest (it seems like the times of FTP and RPC holes are all but forgotten ) While some critisize the list for lack of specificity, it is still a required reading for anybody involved with security.
