You'll probably find that linux is probably the OS with the most native amd64 (x86_64) users. BSD variants and Windows mostly have poor to no amd64 support and/or a smaller user base any way. However, there are still a few drawbacks compared to linux on 32-bit x86.

Very nice list of tools for a sysadmin."SystemImager is basically a specialized boot disk, with some advanced DHCP, rsync (optionally over SSH), and a liberal helping of Perl to glue it all together. The end result is that you can have an install CD (or diskette, USB drive, or a special kernel on the hard drive that you LILO in to the boot sector before rebooting, or even a bootp kernel) that syncs a new box to a stock image you have created and tweaked." The Web100 project was created to produce a complete host-software environment that will run common TCP applications at 100% of the available bandwidth, regardless of the magnitude of a network's capability. Web100 has endowed TCP with better instrumentation. This instrumentation is the foundation for both the TCP autotuning performed in process-level code and the process- level tools designed to locate bottlenecks within the following major subsystems: the sending application, the sending OS, the Internet path, the receiving OS, and the receiving application. Measurement tools have also been built on this instrumentation to display performance indicators to end-users, as well as provide internal diagnostics for network and system administrators.

libRUIN (Renderer for User Interfaces in Ncurses)
is a rendering library for various XML-based user
interface markup languages (such as Mozilla XUL),
using the Ncurses terminal control library as a
rendering target. GNU Guile and the SDOM Scheme
module are used as the "glue" that manages user
input and event handling. An application
programmer passes an XML document (including,
potentially, a set of CSS stylesheets) and an
Ncurses WINDOW structure, and libRUIN paints the
WINDOW according to the markup and CSS. The
programmer may subsequently pass Ncurses-style
input strings to that WINDOW via libRUIN, and
libRUIN will handle the resulting event flows.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
While most of the core API is in place, the rendering behavior is by no means stable enough for use in a production environment. Many areas of the code have been completely rewritten for standards-compliance reasons; as a result, some features that were working in earlier CVS versions have fallen by the wayside.

The Unicode Description Utilities is a set of four programs
for finding out what is in a Unicode file. uniname defaults to printing the character offset of each character, its byte
offset, its hex code value, its encoding, the glyph itself, and its name. Command line options allow undesired information to be suppressed and the Unicode range to be added. unidesc reports the character ranges to which different portions of the text belong. unihist generates a histogram of the characters in its input. ExplicateUTF8 is intended for debugging or for learning about Unicode. It determines and explains the validity of a sequence of bytes as a UTF-8 encoding.

Socat is a relay for bidirectional data transfer between two independent data channels. Each of these data channels may be a file, pipe, device (terminal or modem, etc.), socket (Unix, IP4, IP6 - raw, UDP, TCP), a client for SOCKS4, proxy CONNECT, or SSL, etc. It provides forking, logging, and dumping, different modes for interprocess communication, and many more options. It can be used, for example, as a TCP relay (one-shot or daemon), as a daemon-based socksifier, as a shell interface to Unix sockets, as an IP6 relay, for redirecting TCP-oriented programs to a serial line, or to establish a relatively secure environment (su and chroot) for running client or server shell scripts with network connections.

AcpiTool is a Linux ACPI client. It's a small

audience are laptop users, since these people are
most interested in things like battery status,
thermal status and the ability to suspend (sleep

or /sysfs entries to get or set ACPI values. A
computer running a Linux kernel from the 2.4.x or
2.6.x series with ACPI enabled is needed.
It also supports various extensions for Toshiba, Asus, and IBM Thinkpad laptops.

superimposed on read-only media such as a CD-ROM.
It is useful for live CD distributions or systems
storing files in a PROM or a compressed filesystem

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
There are bugfixes when copying from the read-only filesystem to the read-write one. This impacts the "mknod", "mkdir", "symlink", "rename", and "link" functions. These functions are now working correctly in any conditions. A bad bug in the "link" function has been fixed. When doing "ls", the status of symbolically linked files was not correctly read; this has been fixed.

Xlit is a program for converting text from one
writing system into another. It allows the user to
define a transliteration simply by typing the
input strings in one window and the strings to
which they are to be mapped in another. Transliteration may be restricted to regions bounded by specified delimiters or their complements. Xlit can also convert one type of delimiter to another, e.g. from HZ escapes to XML.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
An initialization file command has been added that allows the user to define keyboard shortcuts. Attempts to transliterate when no transliteration has been defined or when there is no text to transliterate are now trapped. The Help menu has been reorganized, and the menu buttons for the various popups made into toggles. Bugs in the Save Configuration command were fixed. Several cosmetic improvements have been made.

Changes:
The old PHP3 code has been completely replaced with new a new
PHP4/5 compliant parser. The new code uses PHP's built-in SAX

faster than the old code; even a large RSS file like freshmeat's is
parsed in under two hundredths of a second (2800XP/PHP 4.4.0/

e3 is a full-screen, user-friendly text editor with an interface similar to that of either WordStar, Emacs, Pico, Nedit, or vi. It's heavily optimized for size and independent of libc or any other libraries, making it useful for mini-Linux distributions and rescue disks. The assembler version supports Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, Win9x, QNX, Atheos, BeOS, ELKS, and DOS. There is also a separately distributed version written in C which supports some other Unix versions and CygWin. It is also possible to use regular expressions by using child processes like sed. e3 has a built in arithmetic calculator.

Thrust is a rewrite of the classic Commodore 64 game of the same name, ported
to Un*x and MSDOS. The object of the game is to lift the Klystron Pod from the
bottom of a cave and return it safely to space. The Pod is very heavy (compared
to the ship), and this makes it tougher than it may seem. You must be careful
not to run out of fuel, crash into the cave walls, nor let the enemy artillary
outposts shoot you down.

Changes:
GGI support was added, which finally takes Thrust
out of the 8-bits-per-pixel jail. Various
improvements were made in the graphics, making it
even closer to the original. Keyboard
configuration changes are now saved in .thrustrc.
Automake is used for building.

Xorio is a Web application framework for Java with
an integrated content management system (CMS). The
aim of Xorio is to be a solution that is easy to
use in the beginning but still offers the
ambitious user the possibility to extend and
change everything, combined with a gently inclined
learning curve. The core part is a generic
implementation of the model layer (as in MVC)
called Structured Content.
