Nintendo goes just a little bit further with its plans to update the Nintendo DS, announcing that it should soon be adding features—like web surfing and HD TV programming. Though this would first be for Japanese DS owners, the company hopes to begin selling the web browser (which will work in conjunction with the DS's WiFi wireless network) in June and launch the card with digital TV receiver and antenna by the end of 2006. The web browser was developed with Opera software and should cost about $32.

Other announcements included a new lineup for Japanese software, like a foreign language guide for travelers, a reference guide in Japanese and English, training software to improve penmanship in Japanese and a cooking guide giving step-by-step voice instructions for recipes. Wow. Oh, and Tetris DS that would include characters like Mario and Donkey Kong in awkward poses.

Amphetameme.org reads the tea leaves and carefully reasons why Apple is about to release an iPod "phone" which goes far beyond the everyday cellphone and takes mobile media to the next level. The site reviews a few key facts, such as the fact that Apple registered to sell mobile phones and mobile service, and is now officially a phone reseller. Plus, Apple has filed for a trademark for the phrase “Mobile Me.”

From Reuters, Jan. 13, 2006 : “The areas that the trademark covers include computing devices, mobile devices, and mobile services including digital music, video, games, e-mail, and messaging across Internet, intranets, extranets, television, cellular, and satellite networks, the filing shows.”

Then there's that PortalPlayer deal where the manufacturer of a lot of the innards of the iPod has teamed up with a Bluetooth technology company. What does this all mean? An always-connected do-it-all device centered around Bluetooth, WiFi and more. Perhaps. Sign us up.

On Wednesday 16 February 2006, Australian public broadcaster SBS current affairs program DATELINE telecast a segment featuring 60 new photos of the torture inflicted on prisoners in the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq. These photos were secured by court order - the ACLU figures prominently in the report - but these photos haven't yet been shown in the media anywhere in the United States. Because of the broadcast on SBS, you now have access to both Web-downloadable versions and BitTorrent file-sharing network versions of the broadcast on this site. THESE PHOTOS ARE VERY DISTURBING. Please do not view this video if you are easily disturbed by graphic imagery of torture and death.
These files are all hosted on a server located in the United States to speed access for US viewers. CoaSim is a tool for simulating the coalescent
process with recombination and gene conversion
under the assumption of exponential population
growth. It efficiently constructs the ancestral
recombination graph for a given number of
individuals and uses this to simulate samples of
SNP and micro satellite haplotypes/genotypes. The
generated sample can afterwards be separated in
cases and controls, depending on the states of
selected individual markers. The tool can
accordingly also be used to construct cases and
control data sets for association studies.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
This version adds custom markers and population structure to the Python interface.

Zoem is a general-purpose macro/programming
language that submits text to a two-stage
transformation process. Macro expansion and
interpretation is followed by application of
customizable character filtering rules. Zoem
supports inside-out evaluation, comprehensive IO,
control operators, iteration, dictionary stacks,
multidimensional data storage, arithmetic
expressions, regular expressions, system commands,
and more. PUD (Portable Unix Documentation) is
shipped with zoem. It provides two mini-languages
for authoring manpages and FAQ documents.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
Zoem primitives can now be accessed using quoted syntax, and user macros can override unquoted zoem primitives, improving extendibility and backwards compatibility. Three counter primitives and two built-ins were recoded as user macros now located in the new counter package. Built-ins have moved from the user namespace to the primitive namespace. The source code saw many clean-ups, and the documentation was improved and extended. Macro signatures are rigorously checked and enforced. The Portable Unix Documentation package that is shipped with zoem is described in the new pud(5) manual page.

Rsyslog is an enhanced multi-threaded syslogd. Among other
features, it offers support for reliable syslog
over TCP and RFC 3195, writing to MySQL databases, fully configurable output formats (including great timestamps), and the ability to filter on any part of the syslog message. It is designed as a drop-in replacement for stock syslogd and thus able to work with the same config file syntax. Of course, some enhanced features require changing the config file, but in general, this should be fairly easy.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
This version offers an even smarter message
parser, detecting more syslog header formats.
Unfortunately, there is a large variety in header
formatting among the diffent syslogds, and rsyslog
now does an even finer job at guessing how the
message is formatted. Also, the release contains
support for the upcoming IETF syslog-protocol
message format standard. This is a recommended
update for all users of the development branch.

Quilt is a set of scripts to manage a
series of patches by keeping track of the changes
each patch makes. Patches can be applied,
un-applied, refreshed, etc. The key philosophical
concept is that your primary output is patches,
not ".c" files or ".h" files, so patches are the
first-class object here. It was originally based
on Andrew Morton's patch scripts published on the
Linux kernel mailing list a while ago, but has
been heavily modified since then.

Mail Avenger is a highly-configurable,
MTA-independent SMTP server. It lets users run messages through filters like ClamAV and SpamAssassin during SMTP transactions, so the server can reject unwanted email before assuming responsibility for its delivery. Other unique features include TCP SYN fingerprint and network
route recording, SPF (sender policy framework) as a general policy language, qmail-style delivery of extension addresses, validation of sender addresses through SMTP callbacks, mail-bomb protection, integration with kernel firewalls, and more.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
The rbl script command was fixed. The interaction
of relay and rcpt scripts was made at least a
little more intuitive. mbox "From " lines are no

accept new valid characters (depending on which
locale you use). Character validity is checked for
job paths, job arguments, manual conditions, file
conditions, target hostnames, and variable values.

ufdbGuard is a URL filter. The URL filter blocks
access to sets of Web sites on the Internet and is
designed to be used with the popular Web proxy
server, Squid. The multithreaded daemon uses a
fast algorithm that does 25,000 URL
verifications/sec on an Intel 2.8 GHz CPU.

License: GNU General Public License (GPL)

Changes:
As a new feature, URLs that are not part of the
URL database (uncategorized URLs) can be uploaded
to www.urlfilterdb.com for categorisation and
inclusion in the database. The URL filter can no
longer be fooled by putting an extra dot (.) after
a domain name. All threads are no longer stopped
when one thread receives a fatal signal. A
hard-coded directory in the configuration file
which caused "make test" to fail if not used in
/local/src/ufdbGuard-1.x was fixed. "make install"
no longer fails if "." is not in the PATH.
