One especially impressive feature of zsh is its context-sensitive completion system. With zsh, you can use the tab key to complete file names, command flags, shell variable names, and even scripting language syntax.

Showing someone zsh for the first time can be a fun experience because it's a shell with many tricks. Usually, all it takes is a short demonstration of zsh's tab-completion powers to captivate your audience. Being able to type gcc -[TAB] to see a list of its command line options is something that most users could never imagine, but zsh is full of surprises when it comes to making interactive shells as functional as possible.

When concurrency and latency are your bottlenecks, synchronous IO is a problem--even in a multithreaded or multiprocess model. This is especially evident when dealing with high volumes of incoming mail, especially if much of it is spam. Stas Bekman and his team at MailChannels recently built a scalable, modern, event-based system for asynchronous IO. Here's how they did it.

Reviewing software for security bugs is a highly recommended best practice. There are various techniques for doing source code reviews, one of them being “static code analysis” which (in most cases) involves the use of a ‘grepping’ (pattern matching) tool along with a database of patterns that indicate potential security flaws. There are disadvantages to static code analysis: high rate of false positives and the inability to detect logic errors that may lead to security bugs. That said, static code analysis tools can be used to perform a quick first pass on the source code to detect bugs that can be easily identified by a grepping technique (”low hanging fruit”). Some of the free static code analyzers (security) are: Flawfinder, RATS, and SWAAT.
I’ve written about using Google to find security flaws in the past. However, thanks to Google Code Search, it is now easier to scan publicly available source code for potential security issues. The idea is query Google Code Search using techniques previously reserved for local static code analysis. Here are a few interesting queries:
- SQL Injection in Java caused by executing a dynamic SQL query with user supplied input: http://www.google.com/codesearch?hl=en&lr=&q=.*executeQuery.*getParameter.*
- SQL Injection in PHP caused by executing a dynamic SQL query with user supplied input: http://google.com/codesearch?hl=en&lr=&q=.*mysql_query%5C%28.*%5C%24_%28GET%7CPOST%29.*
- Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) in Java caused by echoing user supplied input without HTML encoding: http://www.google.com/codesearch?hl=en&lr=&q=%3C%25%3D.*getParameter*
- Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) in PHP caused by echoing user supplied input without HTML encoding it: http://google.com/codesearch?hl=en&lr=&q=echo.*%5C%24_%28GET%7CPOST%29.*

Web developers never visit their own sites or surf the Web at all. If they did, we would not have so many pure suck Web sites. Readability, navigability, and persistent searchable archives are apparently Crimes Against L33t Web Development. Why do site owners spend zillions of dollars for poo?
This page illustrates a fun new trend:
Pingtel News and Event
Pale fonts! A whole page of them. Fun! Perfect for people who don’t want to bother with reading the page.
Toyota.com is more of a commercial for Macromedia Flash than its own products. They don’t want visitors with slow Internet connections or non-Microsoft operating systems to visit their site. I don’t want a television experience on the Web, because it sucks rocks. Crappy video, crappy sound, and painfully slow. Expensive junk that no one looks at. What’s the point?
ftp1.digium.com/pub/asterisk is an example of a common mistake on Web indexes: truncated filenames. How the heck are you supposed to know what they are? It is very easy to display long filenames in a HTTP index, as this little howto shows. Just two little config lines fixes it.
Final rant: Web documents in .pdf only, or worse, .doc format, and no HTML page option. There are meeeelyuns of conversion utilities. Shame, shame, everybody knows your name.
I could go on and on, but what fun would that be? Tell me your fave Web horror stories.
